Chapter 7 Blog: Cellular Respiration, Fermentation, and Secondary Metabolism (Nicole)

In today's lecture, the class discussed parts of chapter 7.  The class first discussed how energy regulation basically regulates the cell because without energy, the cell can obviously not function.  The class also briefly discussed the first law of thermodynamics once again.  The first law of thermodynamics is that energy is converted from one form to another.  The class also discussed how electrons carry proteins, and that as you go further away on the electron shells, the energy increases.  These two topics surprised me because my first thoughts and views on the subject were contradictory to what we discussed during class.  The class also briefly discussed the second law of thermodynamics which states that entropy is always increasing in the universe.  The class also then briefly discussed how these three:

  1. Glycolysis
  2. Acetyl CoA production
  3. Citric acid cycle

processes are needed by the cells need to do this to produce ATP.  There are2 ways to make ATP

  1. Substrate- level phosphorylation
  1. Chemiosmosis

The class then discussed a little bit about oxidation (the removal of electrons) and reduction (the addition of electrons) and also about redox reactions (electron removed from one molecule is added to another).  Today's class was extremely interesting and I enjoyed it because it was not only helpful for the subject of biology, but also chemistry.

In today's lecture, the class discussed the final pieces of chapter 7 briefly but to the point.  The class finished up discussing about glycolysis and started moving onto the production of Acetyl CoA.  he class also then briefly discussed over the citric acid cycle.  The citric acid cycle in a whole is basically extremely repetitive and it utilizes dehydrogenases in order to reduce NAD+ and produce more NADH.  In today's lesson we also discussed cellular respiration in which  I happen to still have some confusion on.  However, I will look up music video clips and other resources to help me understand this better and if all else of that fails I will be sure to email Dr. Weber all of my questions!

In today’s lecture, the class continued the discussion on chapter 7.  The class learned that oxygen is an oxidation due to the fact it is electronegative and its electrons can easily be removed.  The class also learned that NADH likes electrons.  Dr. Weber also described how high energy electrons removed from NADH and FADH to make ATP typically requires Oxygen.  Continuing on the topic of NADH, the class discussed how it is notable when it is being oxidized because the dehydrogenase electrons are being taken away.   The class then went into a brief discussion on cytochrome BC and Cytochrom oxidase.  Today’s lecture gave me a lot more information on NADH and helped me understand parts of the chapter I was struggling with.  As a side note I liked the concept of the post class quiz on the homework.

In today's lecture the class also continued the discussion of chapter 7.  The class discussed how it is bad for the cell to function without oxygen.  However, the cell can survive.  The class also briefly discussed alcohol fermentation and lactic acid.  In total, the class was very productive and interesting.

B.  Useful Materials

Okayyyyyyy PLEASE ignore the pictures in the backround of this video and please just listen to the lyrics.  This song helped me a great deal in  understanding cellular respiration to a catchy tune.  I hope you enjoy!

This next video helped me understand the process of glycolysis.  Although the guy is a creep, this video is actually very helpful and creative.  I hope you enjoy this as well!

C. Article

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20955683

This PubMed article briefly describes glycolysis and oxidative phosphorylation in the body.  This article also twists in how tumors could have the choice of using gylcolysis and oxidative phosphorylation but why they use one rather than the other to spread around the body.  This article was over-all extremely interesting, I hope you enjoy this as well!
