Chapter 12 Blog: Gene Expression at the Molecular Level (Nicole)

A.  Article

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20628356

This PubMed article is about telomere capping in a non- dividing yeast cell.  The article basically summarized the assembly of a protective cap onto the telomeres of eukaryotic chromosomes and how they suppress genomic instability through the inhibition of DNA repair activities.  The DNA repair activities include the process of normal accidental DNA breaks.  The article showed how a certain complex is entirely dispensable for telomere protection however only in non-dividing cells. However through further detail the article described that without certain molecules, Yku and Rap1, become crucially important for this function in these cells.  This article wraps the attention around the processes in the cells and is extremely informative and interesting.  The results of the experiment showed a high flexibility of the telomeric cap and suggest the distinct configurations may actually provide for efficient capping between non- dividing and dividing cells.

B.  Useful Materials

This video basically shows a brief animation of the gene expression.  This video is extremely interesting and contains amazing graphics to show the intricate details of the process that occurs in the human body.

This second video as a extremely helpful source in learning the process of the mRNA CAP process.  The video is extremely interesting and gives an in depth detailed introduction on the process going on.  The video also goes into detail of some enzymes that the class did not discuss which was also very interesting to learn about.
